Aeroplane Fly in Hunting and Fishing Blocks

Oamaru

The Oamaru River bounds this block to the northwest and the Mohaka River to the north; it includes the lower catchment of the Mangapapa Stream. The contour of the terrain is generally easy. There are Tussock flats along the Oamaru River and the Mangapapa Stream; these are fringed with a band of Manuka scrub that leads into Beech forest, which covers about 2/3 of the block.
The predominant large game animal is Sika Deer with the occasional Red Deer. Small game includes Possums and occasional Rabbit.

There is good access to fish the Mohaka River from the Mangapapa Stream confluence up river and the Oamaru and Kaipo Rivers. There are normally good numbers of Rainbow and Brown Trout, both fly and spinner fishing are allowed during the season (1st October to 30th June).

The Hut has several rooms including two bunkrooms and a lounge kitchen area.  There is also a plywood bivvy with three mattresses provided on the banks of the Anaru Stream, about an hours walk from the main hut. We consider the Oamaru an ideal area for family groups.

Mangaroa

This block includes the entire catchments of the Mangaroa and the Te Mimiohinekaitangi Streams; the Mohaka River bounds the block to the north. The northern end of the block has Manuka scrub, Beech forest covers the remaining 2/3 of the block.
The predominant large game animal is Sika Deer with the occasional Red Deer. Possums are the predominant small game animals.

A cut track leads to the river to fish for Brown and Rainbow trout. There are good numbers of both Rainbow and Brown Trout, both fly and spinner fishing are  allowed during the season (1st October to 30th June). 

 

An A frame hut with 6 bunks, also an A frame bivvy 45 minutes - 1 hours walk up the valley near the Beech forest, will sleep 2, has an enclosed fire place.

Otupua

 

 

 

 

The Mohaka River bounds the south-western corner of the block and the Otupua Stream is near the western boundary. The contour of the terrain is easy to moderate. There are Tussock flats along the Otupua Stream fringed with Manuka scrub, Beech forest covers about ¾ of the block.
The predominant large game animal is Sika Deer with the occasional Red Deer. Possums are the predominant small game animals.


It is a 20-minute walk to the Mohaka River. There are normally good numbers of Rainbow and Brown Trout, both fly and spinner fishing are allowed during the season (1st October to 30th June).

Footy Field

The Mohaka River bisects this block. The contour of the terrain is moderate. The area north of the Mohaka River (airstrip side) has Manuka scrub with very productive pockets of Beech forest, across the river is a fringe of mature Manuka then Beech forest.

The predominant large game animal is Sika Deer with the occasional Red Deer. Small game includes Possums and Rabbits.

There is good access to the Mohaka River. There are normally good numbers of Rainbow and Brown Trout, both fly and spinner fishing are allowed during the season (1st October to 30th June). A flying-fox provides all weather access across the Mohaka River.

North Arm

This block takes in most of the catchment of the Te Waiotupuritia Stream, which includes all of the Blue Duck Stream. The contour of the terrain is generally easy. There are Tussock flats along the Te Waiotupuritia Stream with Beech forest covering the rest of the block apart from some open tops around Blue Duck Stream and on Maungaorangi at the north-eastern corner of the block.
The predominant large game animal is Sika Deer with small numbers of Red Deer. Small game includes Possums and Hares.


It is a 2-hour walk downstream to get to any decent fishing, which is for small numbers of good-sized Rainbow Trout.

A plywood bivvy with three mattresses is provided part way up Blue Duck Stream, about 45-minutes walk from the main hut.

East Creek

An easy 40-minute walk downstream from where you get dropped off at the Oamaru Airstrip. The Mohaka River bounds this block to the north, the block includes the catchment of the Orakei (East Creek) Stream. The contour of the terrain is generally easy. There are grassy clearings along the stream fringed by Manuka scrub that leads into Beech forest, which covers about 2/3 of the block.


The predominant large game animal is Sika Deer with the occasional Red Deer. Small game includes Possums and occasional Rabbit.


There is good access to the Mohaka River from about 500 metres below the Taharua River confluence up to the Mangapapa Stream confluence. There are normally good numbers of Rainbow and Brown Trout, both fly and spinner fishing are allowed during the season (1st October to 30th June).
